1961: Sierra Leone Gains Independence  

Sierra Leone gained its independence in 1961, just at the very beginning of the African decolonization movement of the 1960s and 1970s. Since its independence, Sierra Leone has been in political instability. After 17 years of political instability, it was reorganized as a one-party state in 1978.
