The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship covers all billable expenses at American University, including tuition, room, and board. This scholarship is renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study, provided you maintain satisfactory academic performance. Additionally, AU offers up to eight partial scholarships, each valued at up to $40,000 per year. Recipients of partial scholarships must demonstrate proof of additional funds to cover remaining expenses.
Eligibility Requirements for American University Scholarship
To qualify for the AU EGLS, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be an international student requiring a non-immigrant visa (F-1 or J-1) to study in the U.S.
- Have overcome various obstacles and challenges, with a preference for students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
- Have a minimum GPA equivalent of 3.8 out of 4.0 or be in the top 10% of your graduating class.
- Demonstrate a commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and advancing the needs of people in your home country.
- Meet one of the following English proficiency requirements:
- IELTS score of 7.0+ (with all subscores 6.0 or above)
- TOEFL iBT score of 95+ (with all subscores 20 or above)
- Cambridge Assessment English score of 185+ (with all subscores 169 or above)
- SAT Reading subscore of 33+
- ACT English score of 29+
- PTE score of 65+
- SAT Digital version EBRW score of 630+
- Duolingo English Test score of 125+ (with all subscores 115 or above)
- Be currently enrolled in secondary/high school and graduating by June 2025.
Application Process for American University Scholarship
To apply for the AU EGLS, follow these steps:
- Submit the Common Application or Coalition Application: Apply at https://www.american.edu/admissions/international/au-egls-apply.cfm.
- Complete the AU EGL Scholarship Application and Essays: Submit these via the applicant portal by December 1, 2024.
- Provide a Bank Letter and AU Declaration of Finances Form (AU DFF): Both documents must confirm a minimum of $4,000. Upload these via the applicant portal or email them as PDF attachments to admissionsdocuments@american.edu.
- Submit Official English Proficiency Test Scores: Ensure the testing agency sends your scores directly to American University, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, DC.
- Include an EducationUSA Support Letter: If applicable, provide a letter from your EducationUSA adviser confirming your candidacy.
Important Dates
All application materials, including the Common or Coalition application, supporting documents, and AU EGL Scholarship application, must be submitted by December 1, 2024. Apply for Regular Decision for fall 2025, and you will be notified of your application status by April 1, 2025.
