Prison, an institution for the confinement of persons (or non-human persons as in history) who have been held in custody by a judicial authority or who have been deprived of their liberty following conviction for a crime (Britannica)
Prisons are secured buildings that are meant as an institution for confining, thus reforming people who have committed one crime or the other. Prisoners are individuals that are forced to stay in these prisons (correctional facilities) “for the period of time awarded by the judges during various trials”.
In Wothappen blog post, the title reads thus: “Take a Look at Kirikiri Maximum Prison, that Will Make you Appreciate Freedom.” This shows the maltreatment prisoners receive and also the congestion due to the overpopulation of the prison.

Kirikiri
Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison is a prison situated west of Apapa, Lagos State, Nigeria. It is named after the rural Kirikiri community in which it is located. A part of the Nigerian Correctional Service, its official capacity is 1,056. It was the first setup in 1955 during the colonial epoch. Paul Chiama of Leadership wrote that “The mention of Kirikiri first reminds any Nigerian of” this prison.
Capacity
However, on February 1, 1990, its official capacity was 956 but it had 1,645 prisoners. Then in 1995, a report by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada stated that it was “already infamous” for its overcrowding. Meanwhile, in March 2018, the United Kingdom pronounced it would spend $939,000 to build a new 112-bed wing, in order to make the transfer of Nigerian prisoners from the UK an easy one.
Afterwards, some death row inmates are held at Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison. It was built in the year 1955 with an initial capacity of 1056 inmates. On February 12, 2018, 69% of the prison’s population were inmates awaiting trial corresponding to data from the Nigeria Prisons Service
