Indonesian: Woman Swallowed By Python
Indonesia was shocked by an unusual incident on June 15th, where a 54-year-old woman named Wa Tiba was discovered dead on Sulawesi Island, having been swallowed entirely by a 23-foot python.
Tiba had left her home in Persiapan Lawela the night before to attend to her garden, located approximately 0.5 miles away. Her family stated that Tiba wanted to inspect the garden as it frequently suffered from damage caused by wild boars.
When Wa Tiba didn’t return home the next morning after leaving to tend to her garden, her sister went to look for her. She found only some of Tiba’s belongings, including her flashlight, machete, and sandals, near the garden. Concerned locals, including Tiba’s relatives, then launched a search party of about 100 people.
Eventually, the search party came across a 23-foot reticulated python with a swollen midsection, about 100 feet from where Tiba’s belongings were found. The locals suspected that the snake had swallowed Tiba, so they killed it and carried it out of the garden.
According to Hamka, the local police chief, the villagers cut open the python’s carcass and found Tiba’s body inside. She had been swallowed headfirst by the snake.
Reticulated pythons, such as the one involved in this incident, are the world’s longest snakes and can be found throughout Indonesia and other parts of Southeast Asia.
These creatures can grow to be more than 25 feet long and weigh over 120 pounds. Their enormous size allows them to suffocate their prey before swallowing it whole, then digesting it over several days or weeks.
While they typically prey on animals up to a quarter of their size, such as monkeys and pigs, reports of pythons killing humans are uncommon. However, this was the second recorded incident of a python attacking a human in Indonesia in just over a year.
