Genesis Art Gallery, located in Osogbo, Nigeria, is a three-floor complex showcasing a variety of art forms including wood carvings, paintings, metal works, and furniture.
The gallery was officially opened on April 7, 2018, by prominent figures including Oba Dr. Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, Alaafin of Oyo. This is the largest art gallery in Osun state as far as places have been to. They have a lot of artwork to the extent that the three-storey building is not spacious enough to have all these works.
Wood carvings are a standout feature of the gallery, crafted from both hardwood like ebony and softwood like “omo”. Beginners often start with hardwood for better mastery.
Carving involves sketching on wood trunks and using chisels. Softwood can even be carved with fingernails. After carving, pieces are sanded and optionally polished with leather shoe polish for a shiny finish. Different finishes like paint, glass, or metal can be applied.
The founder, Mr. Adeyinka Fabayo, played a crucial role in promoting Nigerian indigenous art. The gallery has exhibited works internationally and aims to revive Osogbo’s cultural heritage. Since its inception in 1990, the gallery has grown into a major tourist attraction, celebrating African arts and culture.
In essence, Genesis Art Gallery is a symbol of Nigerian artistic expression, drawing visitors from around the world to admire its diverse collection of artworks, particularly its stunning wood carvings.
