1908: Congo Free State Became Belgian Congo

The Congo Free State, which had been the private property of Belgian King Leopold II, became an official Belgian colony in 1908. This was a result of the action of the Belgian Parliament after revelations about Leopold’s rule had become so outrageous that Parliament felt it had no other option.
