The Future Africa platform at the University of Pretoria, with support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, invites applications for the Early Career Research Leadership Fellowships (FAR-LeaF II). This two-year fellowship is designed to equip emerging African researchers with transformative leadership skills and innovative methodologies to tackle the continent’s sustainability challenges.

Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship Overview

FAR-LeaF II focuses on:

  • Research Excellence: Promoting cutting-edge research through transdisciplinary approaches, systems thinking, and futures literacy.
  • Science Leadership: Building a network of leaders dedicated to impactful, sustainability-driven science.
  • Sustainability Goals: Addressing governance, policy innovation, and stakeholder dynamics for resilient solutions.

Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship Programme

Fellows will delve into critical topics within sustainability politics, such as:

  • Governance, public participation, and innovative policymaking.
  • Bridging science, policy, and practice.
  • Managing tensions among stakeholders (governments, NGOs, local communities).

Fellowship Benefits

Participants will gain:

  • Funding: $13,500 annually for two years to cover research, travel, and related expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet these requirements:

  • PhD awarded within the past decade.
  • Employed at an African higher education or research institution.
  • Proven research excellence and societal impact focus.
  • Commitment to leadership development and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Age limit: 45 years for men, 50 years for women.

Application Requirements

  • A research proposal (template available in the application portal).
  • Two academic reference letters (one from the current supervisor).
  • Confirmation from the home institution to support joint proposal development.

Timeline

  • November 6, 2024: Applications open.
  • November 11–30, 2024: Application portal active.
  • January 27, 2025: Selection of candidates.
  • February 24, 2025: Announcement of successful fellows.
  • May 2025: First annual in-person workshop.
