Bower’s Tower, Layipo, Ibadan

Layipo, the Bower Tower, located in Ibadan, Nigeria, is a historic landmark with a rich legacy dating back to its construction in 1930. Named after Captain Lister Bower, the first British resident and Travelling Commissioner for Yorubaland, the tower offers panoramic views of Ibadan from its 60-foot height atop Oke Are hill.

Despite its age, the tower retains its unique architectural charm, providing visitors with an opportunity to witness the city’s sprawling landscape, including landmarks like Cocoa House, Mokola Hill, and Adamasingba Stadium.

The tower’s unique architectural design features narrow staircases that allow only one person to ascend or descend at a time, creating a sense of intimacy and intrigue for visitors. This design also reflects a traditional Yoruba proverb, emphasizing the importance of exploring Layipo, or the unknown, to truly understand Ibadan’s essence.

Despite its current state of neglect, the Bower Tower remains a symbol of Ibadan’s rich history and cultural heritage. Efforts to restore and preserve this iconic landmark could revitalize tourism in the area, allowing visitors to reconnect with the city’s past and appreciate its natural beauty once again.
