Kayabukiya Tavern: Monkey Waiters Serve Here, Interesting (2023 Updated)

Kayabukiya Tavern: A unique Japanese restaurant has taken customer service to a whole new level by employing two monkeys to assist with serving tables.

Located in Utsunomiya, north of Tokyo, the tavern has enlisted the help of Yat-chan and Fuku-chan, two uniformed Japanese macaques, to cater to patrons.

Yat-chan, a twelve-year-old monkey, impresses customers as he swiftly moves between tables, taking drink orders. Meanwhile, Fuku-chan, the younger of the two at four years old, greets diners with hot towels to cleanse their hands before they place their drink orders, following the Japanese custom.

Kayabukiya Tavern: Remarks by Customers

Certified by local authorities to work in the tavern, Yat-chan and Fuku-chan have gained the appreciation of customers who reward their service with tips in the form of boiled soya beans. Some customers even remark that the monkeys are more efficient waiters than certain human counterparts.

The owner of the tavern, Kaoru Otsuka, initially kept the monkeys as pets but soon realized their potential when Yat-chan began imitating him. Yat-chan learned by observing Otsuka’s work in the restaurant and even surprised him by bringing a hot towel to a customer one day.

Kayabukiya Tavern: Monkeys Considered as Relatives

Regular patrons of the tavern, such as Shoichi Yano, consider the monkeys to be like their own children, noting that Yat-chan is more attentive than her own son. Some customers, like retiree Miho Takikkawa, are amazed at how Yat-chan appears to understand their specific orders.

This innovative approach to customer service has attracted attention and fascination, making the Kayabukiya Tavern a unique and memorable dining experience for visitors.
