Features of the Cave
The cave has several chambers but tourists can only access three-four chambers depending on their strength. The Ogbunike caves are actually a system of many caves linked together by small tunnels and passages. They take their name from ‘Ogbunike’, a town in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State, where they are situated (2).
The appalling nature of the cave has made several people lose interest in visiting the cave. As affirmed by afrotourism, the Ogbunike Cave is dark, eerie, and not a place for the faint-hearted.
Structure
The cave is a destination to tick off on a bucket list for the adventurous traveller. There are 316 steps leading to the cave. The main cave consists of a massive structure with a big open chamber of about 5 meters high, 10 meters wide, and 30 meters long at the entrance.
There are ten tunnels at the main chamber leading to different directions. Within the tunnels are big chambers and other tunnels of varying lengths, some of which are interconnected. Bats of various species and sizes are also inhabitants of the cave. Notably, it is believed that women in their menstrual period cannot visit the cave, and also shoes are to be taken off before entering the cave.
